METSYS utilizes state of the art technology to study the atmosphere. The key research areas are: atmospheric pollution, transfer of pollutants, impacts on the environment and climate change. Research are done in close collaboration with the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). Recent experiments in which METSYS participated are ARREX and SAFARI 2000.

METSYS (Meteorological Systems and Technology) - the South African Weather Service's electronic research, development and maintenance arm is on the forefront of technological development of observational and early warning networks for severe weather as well as routine meteorological observations. It is responsible for the maintenance upgrading and development of new improved observational systems enabling forecasters, researchers and climatologists to issue accurate predictions based on high quality observations.

The research conducted by METSYS ranges from rainfall stimulation to the accurate measurement of rainfall using remote sensing platforms such as radar, satellite and surface networks. With water and the availability thereof becoming critical issues in the years to come our ability to apply technology in solving these and other environmental problems are going to be put to the test. METSYS is ideally positioned to address these challenges.
